Feather Quilting over the week end .

Vase with feathers.

This week end brought  heavy rain fall .. So what better way to spend some time

than down in the sewing room . . 

Here you will find the ideas that brightened up my day. 

I made up the quilt sandwich using a light 2oz polyester batting.

Drawing a vase outline , followed by the stem lines of the feathers ..  these as usual were only a guide to help

fill the available space .. 

Creating a natural curve and flow the feathers can bring more depth  to your quilting .

As you can see i went on to echo quilt around the whole design , filling in the space where possible.

 Quilted  headbands filler design  was used throughout to finish this project. 

this simple design quickly fill the space . the fabric colour was a lovely autumn gold so i kept the colours of thread simple  , a dark green and an ivory.

 Here is the finished project . measuring 20x26 inches .

Free Motion Quilting practice

Thought i would give my new machine a little run today .
Took a while to get the tension and type of thread sorted out. .

 Ive found this really helps you getting used to filling in available spaces on your quilt .

Summer Quilt .

 Square within a square quilt.

 Here i started off with using 2 21/2 inch strips , cutting into small blocks and sewing together.
 Using flower design fabrics helped add a summer theme to this quilt .

then adding jelly rolls strips to form the surround squares , then finally adding white sashing .

And all over stippling design was throughout .

Applique flower cushion cover

 Applique cushion 

Placing and  attaching the applique designs with a machine blanket stitch was the first step.

As you can see a Free motion feather design completed the borders, followed up  with a clam shell design , now to sew in all those ends .. 

 Close up of the filler design , i do find this really helps the applique pieces to jump forward .

baby lap quilt.

 

 

Baby lap quilt.

 This lap quilt was fun and fast to make , using 6inch square of pastel colour fabrics.  it came together really quickly.

Then using an all over swirling quilted design.

Autumn patchwork quilt

Autumn lap Quilt.

 Thought i would try my hand at raw applique on this quilt . and with using the colours of
autumn its turned out pretty well ..

 I did a very random design of stippling , and then worked designs of leaves in each block .

Patchwork quilt.

 Fence rail quilt.

This started out using just three strips of fabric from a jelly roll .. but decided to add three more, 

this created a bigger block to work with .. The quilt came together really fast , i used the walking foot to help sew all the segments together , it does really help when you are working with more than one layer of fabric . Now all that is needed is a simple all over quilting design . 

I call this the swirling vine design.

I love this design . I started it a while ago , and at long last its complete. 

The design i stretched out on paper first , then laid it by the side of my machine and off i went . 

But as usual i never stick to the finish deign , but use it more as a guide , but was very pleased with the result .

Purple Quilted feathers .

Started on this piece a few days ago ..

Love the colour purple and with using a silver silk thread i just knew it would well together.


Started off by cutting out two large squares enough for a 20inch cushion cover and a few good
inches spare .. Marked in the outline of a circle and guide lines for the feather surround .Adding a piece of 4oz wadding and a backing fabric .

Then off  to the machine to get started on the Quilting ..

As you will notice there is was no set Design ,  just making a mental note of the space between the border and the center design.. saying that its a  free for all as you go ..

I have decided to use a mixture of cobbles and echoing on the inside and  stippling on the surround.

Found this Design to be simple and yet very effective .

 Stippling is an easy way to finish off this piece , its effective and helps push  out the main Design.

The backing fabric was a cotton floral design .

Set of Quilted feather cushion covers.

Hi there ,

 Over the past few days i had an idea to make a set of colourful cotton/cotton sateen covers ..

first thing was to make up a front cover using the courthouse patchwork block design . .

 

Once the Design was make up and the seams were ironed flat . I made up the sandwich
layer, using 4oz wadding and a plain white backing fabric .

Starting from the center and working my way up to each corner with Quilted feathers .

Now it was time to trim once again and attach the back cover with a zip going across the back .

These were both made up to the size for a 14inch cushion .. and the larger one was 18inch .

Coral blue Quilted covers.

Started on making some Coral Blue cushion covers ..

Cut out the fabric 20x20inch .. enough 4oz batting and backing fabric which was cream cotton.
Marked out the seam line and also some guide lines for the free form feathers ..

The silk thread that i used throughout the design was a light silver in colour .
Happy with this I then continued with the background filler design .

All of this particular filler Design was random using a number of different styles .

 I love the texture shapes and shadows that were created .

After trimming and adding a back covers the finished coral blue feather covers were completed .

 Using a different Design i couldnt resist to make up the same size this time using a Deep Red .

 Kept the filler Design simple this time .and the backing fabric was covered in a free form feather .

Wreath of free form feathers cushion design .

Once I cut out my fabric and added the 4oz wadding and backing i was ready to start 
my design . A small plate was used as my stencil  for the center, then slowly added
the feathers .

 A dark bronze silk thread was using for the main design .. then adding the filler of stippling
in a light cream brought the whole project together . 

The back of the cushion was made from again 100% cotton again using the dark bronze thread

random free form feathers were created..

and this is the finished cover .. this will be one of a pair .

Patchwork and free motion quilted cushion cover

Im new to all this so you must bare with me for a while until i get used to the way things are done around here .



Ive been busy on my machine for quite sometime now turning out Quilts , Curtains throws cushion covers .
Then towards the end of last yr i came across free motion Quilting and just knew i had to give it ago.

So after a few months of practice and encouragement from friends and family i thought it was about time
i put pen to paper so to speak and share the projects that i enjoy doing so much ..



Here is the front of a cushion cover . patchwork all finished  seam lines in place .

 Ive been able to sort out my design and get quilting . 

After a busy evening the front cover is complete . 

cushion cover complete ..Im very pleased with the result .
